UPF clothing has become a must-have item for outdoor enthusiasts, travelers and people who care about sun protection, as it can effectively block harmful ultraviolet rays and protect the skin from sun damage. A common question among many users is whether this functional sun-protective clothing can be dried after washing. The answer is yes, UPF clothing can be dried, but it requires proper methods to avoid damaging its sun-protective performance and fabric quality.
First of all, it is essential to understand the characteristics of UPF clothing. Unlike ordinary clothes, UPF garments are made of special functional fabrics, either with professional UV-resistant coatings or woven with high-density fiber structures. These special designs are the core of their sun-protective effect, but they are also relatively fragile. Improper drying methods will easily destroy the fabric structure and coating, leading to a decline in UPF value and even complete loss of sun protection function.
Air drying is the most recommended and safest way to dry UPF clothing. After washing, gently squeeze out the excess water of the clothes instead of wringing them hard, because violent wringing will deform the fabric and damage the internal fiber structure. Then hang the clothes in a cool, ventilated place to dry naturally. It is worth noting that freshly washed UPF clothing should not be exposed to strong sunlight for a long time. Long-term intense ultraviolet radiation will accelerate the aging of the UV-resistant coating, make the fabric hard and brittle, and gradually reduce the sun-protective effect.
Meanwhile, there are several drying taboos we need to keep in mind. Never dry UPF clothing with a high-temperature iron, and do not bake it on heating equipment such as radiators and hair dryers. Local high temperature will cause irreversible damage to the UV protection structure of the fabric. Besides, avoid over-drying the clothes; slightly damp natural drying is more conducive to maintaining the fabric’s softness and functional stability.
